On Tuesday night, the Atlanta Braves ended a 26-year drought after winning the 2021 World Series over the Houston Astros with a score of 7-0 in Game 6, winning the series 4-2.
The Braves now have a total of four world series titles, winning in 1914, 1957, 1995 and 2021. In 1995 the Braves defeated the then Cleveland Indians, now known as the Cleveland Guardians. But the last time the Braves made an apperance in the World Series was in 1999 when they lost to the New York Yankees.
The Braves made a triumphant return to the competiton, kicking off Game 1 with a homerun from Jorge Soler. This was the first time a World Series game had ever seen a starting hitter clutch a homerun on his first plate apperance.
The Braves won the first game of the series at Minute Maid Park in Houston. Soler gave the Braves an early lead and the Braves added four more runs to the board, including a two-run homer by Adam Duvall. The Astros tried to rally back, but could only manage two runs. With a final score of 6-2, the Braves secured their first win of the series. After the game, the Braves announced that they lost pitcher Charlie Morton to a fractured right fibula after being hit by a ball while at bat.
Houston took Game 2 as their pitcher José Urquidy allowed only two runs and struck out seven batters. José Altuve had two runs and brought in another to contribute to the 7-2 score. Braves pitcher Max Fried allowed six runs off seven hits in five innings pitched.
Atlanta came back in Game 3 at Truist Park, with Austin Riley bringing in Eddie Rosario for a score in the second inning and Travis d’Arnaud hitting a 437-feet home run in the eighth inning. Braves’s Ian Anderson pitched no hitters in five differnt innings and also had four strikeouts.
Game 4 was a closer game, pitcher Dylan Lee getting the start. He became the pitcher with the fewest career appearance to make a start in the World Series. Lee’s night came to an end after pitching for a third of the first inning. During that time, Lee allowed one hit, two earned runs and two walks. He also had a strikeout. Kyle Wright came in to replace Lee with the bases loaded and only allowed one runner to score. Wright also allowed a home run by Altuve in the fourth inning. With back to back seventh inning home runs by Swanson and Soler, the Braves were able to scrape by a 3-2 win, only one win away from winning it all.
Atlanta took an early lead in the first inning of Game 5, scoring four runs in the first inning. The Astros responded with two runs of their own in the second inning, with Alex Bregman batting in batting in Yuli Gurriel and Martín Maldonado doing the same for Kyle Tucker. The Braves would have their last run in the third inning, with Freeman hitting a 460-footer home run. The Astros responded with five runs to take the lead with a score of 9-5, forcing a Game 6 back in Houston.
The Braves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning of Game 6 after outfielder Jorge Soler hit a home run with two other men on base. Shortstop Dansby Swanson hit another homer with one man on base to extend the lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning.
The scoring did not stop as the game went on, with Freddie Freeman hitting an RBI double, meaning the batter made a play that allowed for a run to be scored, and bringing the lead to 6-0. Freeman came back to hit a homerun over left center of the field in the seventh inning, bringing the score to 7-0.
Soler was named the 2021 World Series MVP after hitting three home runs and six RBIs during the series.
