Can I be honest with you all? I can and will spend probably 30 minutes mindlessly scrolling through cooking videos on Instagram on any given day. I can hear my parents now telling me how bad phones are for my brain and attention span. I get their point. But sometimes I just need something mindless to watch after hours of classes, work, studying and homework.
That brings me to a larger point: to a certain extent, scrolling through social media is okay. Obviously if you’re spending hours upon hours on social media, you should probably talk to someone, but turning your brain off for 30 minutes and getting on social media isn’t the end of the world. With everything that’s going on in our lives, whether Berry related or not, watching dumb content on TikTok or Instagram or wherever is okay.
It’s not abnormal either. How many times has your mom rewatched “Gilmore Girls?” Or your roommate rewatched “Grey’s Anatomy?” How many hours has your dad spent just watching whatever game was on regardless of if he cared about the teams? How many posts does your aunt make on Facebook in a day? We all mindlessly consume content, the only difference now is that now the majority of us do so via our phones. Where your parents might have watched TV after a long day of work, we scroll through social media or binge watch a show to decompress after hours of classes.
Especially now, finding a way to decompress and calm down is so important for staying sane. If the last three months of the election have been any indication, this year is bound to be a hectic and probably not very fun one. As we prepare for another rematch between Biden and Trump, it’s inevitable that anxiety and tensions will rise. Embrace what calms you down, even if it’s rewatching “Friends” for the eighth time.
