During the holiday festivities of the last month, many Berry student athletes have been diligently practicing in preparation for spring competitions. While the last four weeks might have been considered vacation for Berry students, for athletes on the swim and dive team, this didn’t mean a rest from typical training involved with their sport. The Swim and Dive teams have been competing since October and their training carried over into the new year. The fall sports team have been dominant this year at Berry. Football, men’s and women’s cross country, and volleyball have all won the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). Anna Rose and Anna Ayers of women’s cross country qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III national championships. Tucker Wright and Troy Blackwood also secured an invitation to the national championships, representing Berry for men’s cross country. Equestrian finished second at the University of Georgia, tied with the University of Alabama. The women’s soccer team made it to the SAA semifinal where they ended their season. Equestrianism is arguably the most successful sport in Berry’s athletic history. With three national championships in the Western discipline as well as five individual national titles, they have brought home plenty of bling to the Viking’s trophy case. The team is comprised of 24 riders who participate in either the Hunt Seat or Western discipline. The team competes throughout the school year starting in October and going until May, provided the team qualifies for post-season championships. In March of 2020, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) allowed for athletes affected by Covid-19 to play an extra year of college sports. Since joining the Southern Athletic Association in 2013, Berry has won 44 SAA championships across 13 sports. On Nov. 2nd, the men’s and women’s cross-country teams added two more trophies to that list, bringing the running total to 46. The Viking’s historic victory saw both teams capture the SAA conference title for the first time ever; the men’s team solidified their dominant legacy with their fourth consecutive conference championship since 2021. The women’s team pulled off a huge upset victory over the Centre College Colonels to win earn their first SAA trophy since the 2016-17 season, their victory halted Centre’s seven-year reign as conference champions, with the Colonels settling for second place. The 2024-2025 basketball season is quickly approaching for the Men’s and Women’s teams. Both teams are coming off successful 2024 campaigns, with the men finishing 19-10 overall, 16-1 in conference and first in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). Berry’s motto, “not to be ministered unto, but to minister,” were words chosen by Martha Berry when the college was first founded to lay the foundation for the service-based culture that Berry is known for. This phrase inspires many programs and endeavors Berry offers, including a special selection of Academic Community Engagement (ACE) courses. There are currently around 30 classes that Berry offers with this designation, each one challenging students to reflect as they pursue opportunities to apply their academic knowledge in different community settings. The baseball team recently honored one of their own in a special dedication ceremony, opening an alumni deck behind the right field fence named “Cloud 9”. This deck is a tribute to the late David Cloud, who graduated from Berry in 1995. Cloud played catcher at Berry over his four years and wore the number nine. The “Cloud 9” deck serves as an exclusive area for Berry baseball alumni who have played for the program over the history of the program. The deck not only represents Cloud but also fosters a space for former players to come together and stay connected with the program. By naming the deck in Cloud’s honor, Cloud will always be remembered as an athlete here as well as a cherished member of the Berry community. On October 2, a historic decision was made impacting Berry College and the city of Rome, Georgia: the NCAA announced every host location for Divisions I, II and III national championships and for the first time ever, Berry College was chosen to host one of these prestigious tournaments. In conjunction with the Rome Sports Commission, Berry will host the Division III national championships for Men’s and Women’s Tennis for the 2027-28 academic year at the Rome Tennis Center.
