It is never too early or too late to make a new year’s resolution

With every new year that rolls around, a plethora of resolutions, goals and declarations are made by people across the globe about what they have decided to change in their lives over the next twelve months. Common resolutions include eating healthier, getting more sleep, reading more or staying off social media. For many, people are able to stick to their resolutions the first few weeks of the new year with relative ease, still invigorated by the knowledge that many around them are also persevering in their hunt for improvement. The more time passes, the more determination frays, resolve erodes and discipline wanes.  Continue reading It is never too early or too late to make a new year’s resolution

Democrats should not compromise their values

It’s often said that history has a tendency of repeating itself. Eight years ago this week, Donald Trump was inaugurated as president for the first time, following an election victory many saw as unthinkable because of his embrace of right-wing extremism and flouting of political norms. On Monday, we saw the same man return to the same office after an election result that was also supposed to be impossible.  Continue reading Democrats should not compromise their values

Our view: Community service is a vital force for real change

As Be Love Week comes to a close, students had many opportunities to volunteer, whether it was taking down holiday decor at James H. Floyd State Park, supporting the Floyd Felines animal shelter or reorganizing donated clothes at the Hospitality House Thrift Store in Rome. These activities allowed students to serve the community and make a meaningful impact within Floyd County. Continue reading Our view: Community service is a vital force for real change

We must be stronger than conspiracy theories and unveil truth

We seem to be living in a society that is growing more and more alienated from reality. It’s not just the misinformation spread with impunity on social media and by some politicians — during this last presidential election, issues, records and positions seemed to take a back seat to the images the candidates could project of themselves and the emotionally charged narratives they could tell about the country. Appearances and suspicion are the chief currency of our political discourse.  Continue reading We must be stronger than conspiracy theories and unveil truth

My lineup for Pelican’s top five snoball flavors

Berry College students know Cookout’s famous 40 different flavors of milkshakes that can be combined to make even more flavors. For someone like me who is lactose intolerant, nothing is scarier than the Carrier’s Editor-in-Chief Carson Bonner’s two lactose-filled months trying every flavor and ranking them. As a sweet treat connoisseur, my go-to place in Rome stems from a New Orleans tradition of combining fluffy snow with bold flavors: Pelican’s SnoBalls.  Continue reading My lineup for Pelican’s top five snoball flavors

Our view: Abolish Greek life for a safer future for college students

There are 750,000 undergraduate members in 12,000 chapters on more than 800 campuses in the United States and Canada according to data provided by the University of New Mexico. Greek life consists of fraternities and sororities, undergraduate organizations designed to foster personal growth and development through mentorship from older members. These groups emphasize values such as sisterhood and brotherhood, providing support throughout college and even after graduation. While Greek life may appear beneficial on the surface, it often faces significant challenges at its core. Continue reading Our view: Abolish Greek life for a safer future for college students

Christmas should be celebrated before thanksgiving

We as a society are very divided on one specific topic, one that brings out the worst in every person involved and creates so much tension around the holiday season. It can get so heated that it even begs the question, “Was it even worth bringing it up?”. That topic is “Should Christmas be celebrated in November?” Continue reading Christmas should be celebrated before thanksgiving

Why human connection should not be neglected

We live in a world today that is connected digitally in many ways. It seems like almost everyone has three or more social media apps on their phone, and every spare second they have is spent scrolling through content or checking alerts. Many may call this “doomscrolling,” others may justify it as a productive use of their free time. People today are replacing authentic interpersonal communication with cheap screen to screen connections that they label “friendships.” In my view, this trend should stop. Continue reading Why human connection should not be neglected

Our view: Students need to be paid while working internships

Students often take any opportunity they can to gain experience in their dream careers, yet this eagerness frequently leads them to unpaid internships. While internships may help build resumes and develop essential skills, the lack of compensation for hard work in unpaid internships sends a troubling message. Unpaid internships are unethical and should be banned before they discourage young professionals from pursuing their fields after college. Continue reading Our view: Students need to be paid while working internships

We should be much more kind to “creepy” critters

Something we prize in our society to make us smile or make our wallpaper and fawn over whenever we see it are cute animals. As a kid, I’ve always loved animals no matter their size or looks, so I grew up appreciating all flaws, even the creepy crawlies. One day I thought, “Why do we consider some animal gems to host in our backyard and other pests that need to be shooed away or captured by pest animal control?” Continue reading We should be much more kind to “creepy” critters
