Berry scary ghost stories to tell in the dark

As the leaves begin to change colors and the weather starts to cool down, the month of October marks the beginning of the fall season. October is a time to watch classic horror films and tell scary stories around the fireplace to set the mood for the Halloween season. While most people dismiss these stories as made-up myths, Berry College has its own share of ghost stories that are said to be true. These stories originate in some of the campus’ oldest buildings, with ghost sightings being reported back 50 years.  Continue reading Berry scary ghost stories to tell in the dark

The unique history of Berry’s Mountain Day traditions

One of Berry College’s most special traditions is the weekend of the Mountain Day celebration. Founded in Berry’s rich history, each year, the college invites students, alumni and parents to participate in different festivities to celebrate the birthday of its founder, Martha Berry (Oct. 7, 1865-Feb. 27, 1942). The event will take place this year from Oct. 4-6 with a variety of activities, from the annual picnic, Grand March, a football game and Marthapalooza.  Continue reading The unique history of Berry’s Mountain Day traditions

What you didn’t know about freshmen student government

The semester is now well underway, with classes entering their first round of exams and papers. As new students grow more accustomed to life at Berry, many are beginning to branch out through different college activities.  While some chose to get involved in intramural sports or clubs, one group has chosen to spend their time campaigning for positions on the Student Government Association (SGA). Hopeful freshmen have begun campaigning by advertising through posters and social media, with the goal of being elected as representative of their class. 23 candidates are running for the four officer positions available: president, vice president, treasurer, and secretary. The pressure is on as these freshmen work individually to inspire their class to cast their vote this week.  Continue reading What you didn’t know about freshmen student government

How BCC 100 impacts your Berry experience

“The culture of mentorship” is perhaps one of the most unique features of the Berry education. While many consider the college to be known for its sprawling campus and rigorous academics, the mentorship program provides each class of freshman with a support system that is designed to help them adjust to college life. Based on Martha Berry’s own beliefs of helping students while providing an education, the mentorship program places each student in a class called Berry College Class (BCC 100) that they will take during their first semester at Berry. The Berry Bucket List: How it changes through your years at Berry

After the excitement of freshmen move-in and Viking Venture winds down, the initial week of classes may be the first dose of reality for many new Berry students. Those first few days after moving into college are filled with a whirlwind of events and introductions, and for many students, these days can feel more like a summer camp than school. With classes now underway, new students may find that the reality of college is not what they experienced during those first few days; classes can quickly become overwhelming, and it can be challenging to find a balance between school, work  and extracurriculars.     Continue reading The Berry Bucket List: How it changes through your years at Berry

Summer Research: What you missed during the last few months at Berry

Each year as the month of May rolls around, Berry’s campus begins to fall silent as students pack up their dorms and head home for the summer. Many look forward to the summer months as a time of relaxation and freedom from the constant cycle of exams, but this time serves as an opportunity for students to focus on jobs, internships, study abroad courses and student research. Berry may have felt empty during these summer months, but many students and professors have been working hard on various research projects.
