“Failure is the best teacher.” Douglas Elly, the coach of the Berry College men’s tennis team, takes that saying to heart. On Friday, during a 2 p.m. game at the Rome Tennis Center, the men’s team lost to Wallace State Community College 0-7. Berry’s softball team had no idea that their scrimmage on Saturday would be canceled due to cold temperatures. With an upcoming game against Maryville College fast approaching, many players wondered how they would prepare for the match. However, Meredith Mills, the team’s coach, had a contingency plan in place in case something like this occurred. Her solution was an intrasquad event, where a team splits into groups that play against each other. Mills is very confident that this intrasquad event will be beneficial to her team and that it is a suitable substitute for the scrimmage. It began at 8 p.m. The Berry Basketball team was going up against Centre College in the Cage Center. Berry eked out a narrow win, scoring 63 points to Centre’s 62. The conference gets tougher every year. At least, that’s the take that Richard Vardy, head coach of the men’s soccer team gave when asked about this season’s championships. However, the team was able to win the conference championship. The team’s morale was high, and they were all in good spirits. “This feels wonderful,” Vardy said in regarding the championship win. “It’s what we always set out to do every year, and to win it feels very good.” Continue reading Men’s soccer crowned region champs, fall in playoffs
Both Berry College’s football and volleyball teams are now nationally ranked. The football team was ranked for the first three weeks of the season, before spending the next two weeks unranked. After beating Trinity College on Oct. 11, the football team was ranked once again. The team also won the conference championship this weekend, winning against the Maryville Scots. The volleyball team had two games this past Saturday. The first game was against Randolph-Macon College, which they won with a score of 3-0 The second game was against Emory University, which they lost , leading to a final score of 1-3. The football team was ranked 17th in the D-III football rankings. The volleyball team was ranked 19th in the AVCA ranking. Continue reading Football, volleyball work their way up through rankings
