Danish author Hans Christian Anderson once said, “Where words fail, music speaks.” This sentiment seems to be especially evident amongst Berry’s student body who not only consume a high quantity of music, but a variety of it as well. Walking around campus, one would be hard-pressed to not see at least one or two students wearing earbuds or headphones of some sort. However, have you ever taken a step back and wondered what each and every person’s personal music taste is? For this week’s issue, we asked Berry students what their favorite music genre, artist, and song is and why.

“The Juice Vol. 1” by Emotional Oranges

Ananya Achari is a freshman psychology major on the pre-medical track. “I think my favorite genre is R&B/soul music, and my favorite artist is Emotional Oranges,” She said, “I have always loved this genre among other but after listening to this specific artist, I think I have found music that perfectly caters to what my brain wants to listen to. I’ve listened to just about all their songs and all of them fit this description of catering to my brain, however I think my favorite song is “Personal” or “Sundays” by Emotional Oranges.

Tori Teague is a freshman. “My favorite genre is alternative rock,” She said, “My favorite artist within the genre is King Princess. Their new album, “Hold on Baby,” highlights the struggles of self-identity during quarantine. Going into college, I have struggled with my own identity and how I fit in at Berry. My favorite song is “For My Friends,” because it highlights the blessing of having friends that stick by your side through all of your changes.”

“Lover” by Taylor Swift

Jackson Manford-Roach is a junior psychology/philosophy major. “Pop is my favorite genre,” He said, “Taylor Swift is my favorite artist, “ME!” by Taylor Swift is my favorite song because it reminds me of the summer which is my favorite time of the year and it’s also very nostalgic.”

Izzy Goninan, sophomore Religion and Psychology double major, briefly spoke with me about her love for classical music, a genre not particularly popular among this generation of college students. Izzy says, “I am a really big fan of string sections. One of my favorite Spotify playlists is called Mello Cello.” When asked about the specifics of why she is particular to strings, she said, “I especially love when I hear these instruments breathe. When you listen to more raw-sounding recordings of violins, you can almost hear a suck-in noise of sorts.” Izzy encourages all students to at least give classical music a listen, saying, “Classical can be so fun. I have another playlist called Chaotic Classical, which has songs that are a little more fun.”

“American Heartbreak” by Zach Bryan

Courtney Collins, Senior Spanish and Management double major, said, “I would say I’m one of those weird people who doesn’t listen to just one genre. I just kidna listen to whatever I’m feeling. When I asked what her favorite artists to listen to recently have been, she said “Zach Bryan” and “Charlie on a Friday,” which are country and indie pop acts, respectively.
