Sandeep Mazumder has been selected as Berry’s next president by the Board of Trustees. In an announcement Monday, the board said it chose Mazumder, who is currently the dean of the Hankamer School of Business at Baylor University, in a unanimous vote.

Mazumder was born and raised in England, receiving bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from Cambridge University. He moved to the United States to pursue his PhD at Johns Hopkins University. Mazumder worked as a professor of economics at Wake Forest University for 13 years before taking his current position at Baylor in 2021.

Mazumder’s selection closes a search process that began in April, when current president Steve Briggs announced his retirement after 18 years at Berry. Although over 175 candidates applied for the position, the search committee came to its decision a month earlier than the expected announcement date of December.

Sandeep Mazumder will begin serving as Berry’s next president in July
2025. He was selected unanimously by the Board of Trustess from an initial
field of over 175 candidates.

“My family and I are delighted to come to Berry here next summer and join the community,” Mazumder said. “I do think we believe in the same things, so that’s why I think it was a good match, and I think we have lots of good work to do together.”

Mazumder will begin his role in July 2025. He said he is looking forward to the opportunity to build on Berry’s current success.

“Steve Briggs has done a remarkable job — I’ve just been really impressed with all that he’s done in almost a 20-year period, and he’s built a solid foundation,” Mazumder said. “I really want to get out soon after I start next summer, getting out there into the community and meeting people.”
