On Jan. 20, the one year anniversary of President Donald Trump taking office for the second time, students across Georgia colleges and high schools gathered in protest of his administration. According to 285 South News, students from 22 high schools and colleges in Georgia partook in the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) protests throughout the week. On July 4, 2025, Congress signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) into law. The OBBBA is mostly known for its budget changes for the defense department and border enforcement, but also includes changes to federal loan plans for students.
