Berry College 48 Hour Film Challenge Rules

Write, shoot and edit a short film in a weekend.  With teamwork and complete focus, you can make a cohesive and entertaining movie in an exceptionally short time frame- just 48 hours!

The following rules apply to each participating group or production team:

  1. The Film Challenge, organized by Viking Fusion, will occur between Friday, March 15 @ 5:00 pm and Sunday, March 17 @ 5:00 pm.
  2. Only films that meet the deadline will be eligible for screening and judging.
  3. The Film Challenge is open to all college student filmmakers.
  4. A single person can make up a team and a person may belong to as many teams as they like but may only head up one.
  5. All cast and crew must be volunteers
  6. Film Challenge entrants are accepted on a first come, first served basis.
  7. Films must include the designated genre, line of dialog, and prop as established at the commencement of the Film Challenge on Friday evening. These parameters will be announced via Viking Fusion’s Social Media platforms, as well as on vikingfusion.com.
  8. Content of the film is at the discretion of the participating groups.
  9. During the official competition period, all creativity will take place, including but not limited to:
    • Writing the script
    • Rehearsing
    • Costume or Set Design
    • Shooting
    • Editing
    • Graphics & Visual Effects
    • Sound Design & Music
  10. The only work to begin prior to the official competition period is:
    • Organizing Crew
    • Organizing Cast
    • Securing Equipment
    • Scouting or Securing Locations
  11. All footage must be shot within the weekend time period. No stock footage or footage shot or created at another time may be used.
  12. Any type of video or film camera may be used.
  13. Animation and special effects are permitted, but must be created during the weekend time period
  14. No copyrighted content (video, songs, etc.) may be used without the consent of the copyright holder.
  15. The finished film must be a minimum of three (3) minutes in duration, and a maximum of eight (8) minutes in duration.
  16. Finished film should have 5 seconds of black, then the following slate:
  17. Team Name, Film Title
    • Slate should appear before the film begins.
  18. Credits at the end of each film are limited to a maximum of 60 seconds. This is in addition to the 8-minute maximum time limit. (For example, you may have a 5 minute film plus 1 minute of credits for a total running time of 6 minutes.) Films longer than 9 minutes are not eligible.
  19. Films must include the following credit: “This film was made as part of the Berry College 48 Hour Film Challenge 2024.”
  20. The finished film must be submitted as an MP4 file or .mov file via Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or DropBox to vikingfusion@berry.edu.
  21. To be certified as a “Berry College 48 Hour Film Challenge Film,” each participating group’s film production must follow all rules herein. Viking Fusion organizers reserve the right to judge only certified “Berry College 48 Hour Film Challenge Films.”
  22. All certified “Berry College 48 Hour Film Challenge Films” are eligible for judging. Judges will select one overall Winner. “Fan Favorite” Film will be voted on by the audience.
  23. All certified “Berry College 48 Hour Film Challenge Films” will be published on Viking Fusion’s website and YouTube channel.
  24. Each participating group must provide Viking Fusion with two ways of contact: email and phone
  25. Team leaders must complete and submit the event’s Liability and Release Form to Addison Howard (addison.howard@vikings.berry.edu) or Steven Hames (shames@berry.edu) before March 15 @ 5:00 pm in order to participate in the contest.  
  26. The Berry College 48 Hour Film Challenge organizers reserve the right to amend these rules up until the beginning of the Challenge.
  27. The organizers reserve the right to disqualify any film that contains questionable material that, in the organizers’ minds, might be considered objectionable or inappropriate to general public interest.
